The Tyrum Consciousness is a hive-mind civilization that was discovered in 2089, and invaded Earth in 2090. They are the primary reason for the militaristic and xenophobic policies of the Greater Terran Union. The origins of the Tyrum are currently unknown, but their homeworld, Byrum, was discovered in 2256.

First Contact

On April 22nd, 2089, Military Satellites began tracking a cluster of objects that had entered the extremities of the solar system. It took only two months for the Tyrum ships to reach Earth, and less than an hour for the fleet to destroy the hastily assembled orbital defense satellites. On February 17th, 2090, the capital ship of the Tyrum leveled the most populous cities on Earth via orbital bombardment, killing billions. A coordinated nuclear strike against the Tyrum Capital ship and the largest vessels of the Tyrum fleet resulted in the crippling of any orbital support, leaving only drop ships and light support craft for the Tyrum Invasion.

Tyrum forces were immediately deployed across the globe, primarily in heavily populated regions. Within a few months, the Tyrum had crippled the largest armies of the world and had secured a third of the planet. As the Tyrum advanced they met increasingly fierce resistance, and eventually the frontlines stagnated and a war of attrition began. Without any new reinforcements, supplies or any sort of orbital support, the Tyrum had to rely on an ever dwindling number of troops to fight billions of humans. Despite their precarious military position, the Tyrum dedicated vast amounts of resources to the construction of various terraforming spires. These spires poisoned the atmosphere around them, blanketing Tyrum territory in a fog toxic to humans. While effective in rooting out pockets of survivors, the overall tactical advantage given by the terraforming spires was minimal and only served to prolong the war.

After seven years of ceaseless fighting and the loss of their most powerful war machines, the last remaining Tyrum forces evacuated the solar system to an unknown destination. Any and all contact with the the eventual Byrum Cataclysm

"Excerpt from an Unknown GTU Diplomat on the Tyrum's fate:

It wasn't a glorious war fought tooth and nail, to the last man, woman, and child. No. The Tyrum, in their own genocidal zeal and blinding hate to all xenos, had sealed their own fate: too many enemies on too many sides with too many failed attacks. Earth and humanity had just been one more of their failures, a crushing one to be sure, but one too far away from them.

They were wrong.

They did not take into account, neglected by their own hate, foolish perceived superiority, and stupidity, the most crucial traits of humanity: Human ingenuity, adaptability, creativity, and sheer will.

Now their homeworld is no more. The Sword of Terra made sure of that.

There was no glorious retribution fought meter by bloody meter. No fierce space battles where humanity would show its genius tactical and strategic skills. No invasion to show undying determination. There was no glory. Only a promise fulfilled and sweet vengeance.

The original invaders, the Tyrum, are on their way to extinction, be it by us or others it does not matter. They will die and will not be missed nor remembered. The galaxy beckons, and humanity shall answer the call.

Terra Aeterna! Sol Invictus! FOR THE GTU!"

Galactic Impacts

Beyond their impact upon the formation of the GTU, the Tyrum are directly responsible for the diffusion of advanced technology throughout much of the galaxy. In particular their raids in the galactic North allowed for both the Humans and the Polenians to gain access to technology centuries, if not millennia ahead of their prior development. Subsequent forensic analysis showed the Tyrum were themselves the product of some other advanced race who are assumed to have been the true creators of the technology. Lacking any sort of self control, Tyrum raids inevitably led to their ships and weapons platforms falling into enemy hands in circumstances where for whatever reason, their efforts were thwarted. By all accounts the invasion of Earth was a more severe example of such circumstances. In the case of the Polenians, their technological jump was brought about by the discovery a single tyrum vessel in orbit of the 6th planet in their home star system of Nimerium.
